Methods for the prevention of dementia

To date, research has shown that there are several factors and practises which could protect us against the risk of developing dementia, such as:

  • Maintaining a balanced diet (Mediterranean diet has been shown to have several benefits)
  • Increasing physical and social activities.
  • Getting education, especially in early childhood
  • Engaging in cognitively stimulating activities
  • Quitting smoking.
  • Reducing alcohol abuse. However, moderate use of alcohol, especially wine or beer, seems to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s dementia.
  • The treatment of hypertension, diabetes, hearing disorders, inflammation, depression and metabolic syndrome disorders.

It is important to remember that these factors can be controlled.
